Pre-Trip Trailer Inspection Checklist
Manufacturers install safety features on trailers based on design and load capacity. The overall trailer condition is also a crucial factor to take into account.
Before road travel, inspect these features:
- General trailer deck or sidewall condition
- Wheel wells
- Ensure wells are secure and free of debris
- Lights
- Operational, clean, and free of debris
- Conspicuity tape
- In good condition
- Tires
- At the recommended PSI
- Tire tread, valve stem, and sidewall inspection
- Look for cracks, punctures, foreign objects, and other damage
- Ensure the spare tire is in good condition
- Lug nut wrench and jack available
- Rims
- Free of damage, and all lug nuts are tight
- Receiver with locking pin
- Use the correct ball size for the ball coupler
- Trailer coupler with securement latch
- Light harness
- Condition of insulation
- Prongs/receivers are not fowled
- Safety chains and hooks
- Cradled/crossed
- Wheel chocks available during hooking and unhooking
- Break-away brake system
- The cable is in good condition
- Pin seated properly
- Battery tested (2-year life)
Tow Inspections
Before the tow: Before towing, drivers should balance the load over the axles, ensure it does not exceed the weight limit, and secure it from movement. They should also adjust the mirrors or consider using tow mirrors. Passengers should also assess the risk.
During the tow: Drivers should complete an inspection during any stops made. They should also continuously evaluate terrain for possible hazards or a change in the feel of the load.
After the tow: Always inspect the trailer for any changes or damage.
