Small Habits That Make a Big Difference in Road Safety

As a driver, you are responsible for the condition of the vehicle you operate. One of the most important areas of vehicle safety is tire maintenance. Driving on worn or damaged tires puts not only you at risk, but everyone sharing the road.

The Dangers of Worn Tires

Driving on bald tires is hazardous and may cause:

  • Reduced braking ability, especially in emergencies
  • Increased risk of blowouts
  • Loss of vehicle control
  • Hydroplaning on wet roads
  • Poor traction in snow or icy conditions, leading to sliding or skidding
  • Driver fatigue from needing extra focus to stay on the road
  • Decreased fuel efficiency, costing you more at the pump
  • Potential fines or tickets from law enforcement

Signs Your Tires May Be Unsafe

When inspecting your tread condition, look for the following:

  • Cuts or wide cracks
  • Tread separation
  • Punctures
  • Bulges
  • Objects embedded in the tire (nails, screws, rocks, metal)
  • Splits or other visible damage

Any of these warning signs can dramatically shorten the lifespan of your tires and compromise safety.

Tire Pressure

Proper tire pressure is essential for safe handling, smoother rides, better fuel economy, and maximum traction. Always check your owner’s manual or the placard on the driver’s door pillar for the recommended pressure for your vehicle’s tires.

The Penny Test

Did you know you can easily check your tires’ tread depth with a Lincoln penny? Insert the penny upside down into the tire groove with the top of Lincoln’s head facing downward. If the top of his head is visible, your tread is too low, and it’s time to replace your tires.

Before starting any trip, take a minute to inspect your tires. Regardless of the vehicle type, regular tire maintenance is crucial for the safety of everyone on the road. For more safety tips, contact your local Risk Control Consultant. Click the button below to find an agent near you.
