Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls on Forestry Jobsites

Enhancing Safety and Reducing Incidents in Challenging Work Conditions

Over the past few months, we have seen an increase in incidents within the forestry industry, specifically involving drivers slipping and tripping on jobsites. While failing to use three points of contact when entering or exiting equipment remains a common cause of injury, many recent incidents have involved drivers walking around on the loading deck.

The combination of wet, snowy, and icy conditions during this time of year has contributed to a higher occurrence of these incidents. To mitigate these risks, consider implementing the following safety measures.

Reduce Unnecessary Movement

Positioning pole saws, binders, and other tools that drivers need to secure their loads in a designated area near where they stand on the jobsite can help reduce unnecessary movement. Minimizing the distance drivers must walk to locate necessary equipment lowers their exposure to mud, debris, and unstable ground conditions. Creating a designated, safe workspace away from the loader where drivers can pull their trucks and complete their tasks efficiently also enhances safety.

Improve Site Accessibility and Organization

If drivers need to obtain paperwork from the loader operator, ensuring there is a clear and safe pathway is crucial. Whenever possible, having the loader operator bring paperwork to the drivers, especially for older workers who may have difficulty climbing and jumping, can help prevent incidents.

Enhance Awareness and Housekeeping

Equipment operators should maintain a clean loading deck by removing excess debris and limbs that could pose tripping hazards. Additionally, all workers, including drivers, should wear appropriate footwear designed for the rugged and unpredictable conditions of a logging jobsite.

By implementing these simple yet effective safety measures, companies can significantly reduce the likelihood of slip, trip, and fall incidents on forestry job sites. A proactive approach to job site safety helps ensure that all workers return home safely at the end of the day.
